We are going to the

Lismore Rainforest Botanic Gardens and the Lismore Garden Centre

Stopping at Clunes Store and Café

ITINERARY

  • Gosels coach will leave Knox Park at 8.30 am on Saturday 1st June. It seats 35 people and will have a capacious luggage compartment for purchases. If you are planning to buy plants, perhaps bring some cardboard boxes and newspaper to wrap and carry them home in. This will avoid mess in the coach’s luggage compartment.
  • Our first stop will be at Clunes Store and Café, for coffee, cake and use of their conveniences, about 10.00 am. Clunes Store sells local produce, fresh fruit and vegetables, milk, preserves, cheeses, Bread Social bread, so if you need to stock up for lunch, this is the opportunity!
  • We should leave there by 10.30 for the Lismore Garden Centre. The owner, Cameron Johns, is expecting us about 11.00 am. The nursery sells many different types of plants, some unusual species, with lots of indoor and shade-loving plants. They also sell decorative garden items and pots. There will be room on the coach for purchases.
  • From the Garden Centre, it is a short bus trip to the Lismore Rainforest Botanical Gardens. Tracey Whitby, President of the Friends of the LRBG, will meet us there around 12.00 noon. She will arrange Guided Walks for those who want to be guided, at a cost of $5.00 (cash only, on the day). We will have to tell her soon how many people want guided tours, so she can arrange for some Friends to be on deck for that. Please wear sensible walking shoes/boots as the paths can be rough, hats, and carry water bottles. Maybe wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts in case of mosquitoes. Take personal insect spray if you are susceptible to bites from mozzies, midges, ticks etc.
  • Before the tours we will have our lunch (BYO) in the weather-proof shelters. Tracey has offered to make us a cuppa after the tours and the charge for this is a gold coin donation. It would be lovely if a few people could bring some cake, biscuits, or a slice cut up to have with our cuppa and share with the Guides.
  • LRBG will not have any plants for sale. Their nursery is open on Wednesdays for sales. They will probably have sold out by the time we get there, because they are having a BGANZ (Botanic Gardens Australia and New Zealand) Open Day on Sunday 26th April, and they will have plant sales that day.
  • We should depart from the LRBG around 3.00 pm or so, and hope to arrive back in Murwillumbah by 5.00 pm.

OTHER ISSUES

  • For more information about the LRFBG see the website of the Friends of Lismore Rainforest Botanic Gardens Inc.
  • There are no fire ants in Lismore so far, so it is safe to bring plants and soil from the nursery.

As this is a Botanical Garden and a public amenity, of course we don’t pick flowers or vegetation, take cuttings, or remove anything from the area.
