January Jobfile from the November 2001 Newsletter

  • Mow lawns on 15th and 21st of January to take advantage of the moon’s barren phase. Grass cut now will stay cut for longer than at other times of the lunar cycle.
  • Sow lettuce, parsley, rocket and basil on 17th and 18th of January when the moon’s influences on soil moisture is at its optimum.
  • Prune on 22nd of January to stimulate healthy, fresh new growth on shrubs such as grevilleas, roses and camellias. This is also the best day of the month to feed your plants with liquid fertiliser applied directly to the foliage as well as watered into the soil.
  • If there is rain, trap it into the soil with mulch.
  • If you are watering, deep soaks rather than a surface sprinkle are the go.
  • Keep on top of weeds from now on as they are starting to set seed.
  • Take softwood and semi-hardwood cuttings of your favourite shrubs.
  • If you’ve decided your garden is too much hard work, look around and consider areas which can be
  • simplified or made less labour-intensive. Jot down your ideas for execution in autumn when it’s cooler.
  • Deadhead perennials such as salvias and day lilies to induce more flowers.
  • Find a cool spot to sit and enjoy a pleasant corner in your garden. Acknowledge your successes whether large or small.
